Dear Podcast Publicist…
Your Spraying and Praying Isn’t Helping You
Dear Podcast Publicist,
Thanks for your email. Before I reply to the enticing proposition to interview your creepy client with dubious credibility in his purported field of expertise, allow me to acknowledge the necessary and critical symbiosis between publicists and media properties.
Journalists, TV producers, and — yes — independent podcasters require alluring, intelligent guests to create compelling content. When you connect us with a great interview, it’s a win-win, so we’re happy to consider pitches that are frequently off the mark. But after three years of studying incoming inquiries, I can testify that your strategy of slinging shit against the wall and hoping some sticks is working against you.
The first problem is that ‘spraying and praying’ will only land interviews on crappy shows lacking rigorous booking guidelines. Podcasts with vision proactively maintain qualitative and topical standards that help them rise to the top, if only to their loyal listeners’ queue. We seek out excellence. We do not wait until adequate conversational partners arrive in our Inbox.
